Open call: Scenography Intern
STUDIO JULIAN HETZEL IS LOOKING FOR A SCENOGRAPHY INTERN
(16 h/week, 2 days a week in Amsterdam)
Studio Julian Hetzel creates undisciplinary art projects that combine contemporary theatre, performance and visual arts. The studio functions as a creative workshop, and a laboratory. Research and experimentation are the driving forces behind the studio’s artistic practice. We receive structural support from Fonds Podiumkunsten and the City of Utrecht and for our upcoming project we’ll collaborate with NTGent.
We are looking for a scenography intern for our upcoming creation Ctrl+C, to premiere in May 2027 in co-creation with NTGent. The stage concept will include robotics / animatronics and video. As a scenography intern you will be directly involved in the creation of the set design of this new performance, supporting Julian Hetzel and Django Walon and the artistic team.
The internship is for a period of 5 months between August/September 2026 — mid January 2027. You will mostly work from our studio in Amsterdam, with occasional trips to Gent.
What you will do a.o.:
- Assisting with visual research, mood boards and collect reference materials
- Helping develop scenographic concepts
- Building models and test elements for the set
- Helping source materials or other objects
- Be involved in the integration of video, robotics and interactive technology in the set design
- Assist in the construction of the set
- Attend weekly team and production meetings
- Attend occasional rehearsals in Gent
- Communicate with other team members (including: costume designer, engineering and production).

Research for Ctrl+C is now in full swing. On 15 January the scenography will be final. To get there, we test elements in our studio in Amsterdam as well as during rehearsals at NTGent. Rehearsal blocks at NTGent are planned from 6–15 July 2026, 31 August – 11 September 2026, 07–18 December 2026. The performance will premiere on 20 May at NTGent, and will then tour internationally.

- Good visual/spatial communicator with technical curiosity
- Hands-on maker
- Out-of-the-box thinker
- Proactive and with good communication skills
- Flexible and problem-solving
- Neoliaberal and slick
- Fluent in English
- Living in the region of Amsterdam / Utrecht
- Available during the rehearsal and montage blocks indicated above

What we offer:
- An inspiring learning environment in a small and dedicated team.

- You are directly involved in the artistic process of an internationally touring production
- Space to bring in your own ideas
