Pan Pan International Mentorship with Julian Hetzel

Pan Pan is delighted to welcome Julian Hetzel as a mentor for 2024 to work with up to five performance makers based in Ireland to develop early-stage ideas for contemporary performance projects.

This is a one-on-one mentorship programme in which each participant will have four mentorship sessions with Julian (two online and two in Dublin) and each of the selected participants will receive a bursary of €2,200 to help them set aside dedicated time to work on their ideas. We will also offer some travel subsidy to each artist to help them to see relevant work internationally. Previous participants have used the subsidy to see work in Brussels, Ghent, Groningen, Amsterdam, Antwerp, Vienna, Paris, New York, London, Bristol, Edinburgh and Istanbul. This is the eleventh edition of the International Mentorship programme which Pan Pan initiated in 2012. The previous mentors have been Kirsten Delholm of Hotel Pro Forma (Denmark), Viviane De Muynck of Needcompany (Belgium), Tim Crouch (UK), Stewart Laing of Untitled Projects (UK), Anna-Sophie Mahler of CapriConnection (Germany), Johanna Freiburg of She She Pop/Gob Squad (Germany/UK), Kelly Copper of Nature Theater of Oklahoma (USA), Terry O’Connor of Forced Entertainment (UK) and Susanne Kennedy (Germany).

What to expect from the International Mentorship:

The engagement of the mentor is aimed to pose challenges and interrogate the early-stage ideas for contemporary performance within a supportive structure. Engagement with Julian Hetzel will take place online and in Dublin over four sessions between March and July 2024. As well as group meetings at the start and end of the programme, each participant will have time to discuss their project ideas individually with Julian four times for about two hours each time. Meetings will take place online and, where possible, at the offices of Pan Pan, the Goethe Institut and Dublin Theatre Festival in Dublin. Each participant will be given the option of access to a dedicated workspace in our partner organisations for three days over the mentorship period.

The bursary is for contemporary theatre and performance makers to buy time to work on an idea in its early development stages, outside of the pressures of production. There is also a small amount of subsidy to help each participant to travel to see work internationally. The team at Pan Pan and Julian will be happy to advise on suitable upcoming events and can, where possible, facilitate introductions locally. This year, Dublin Theatre Festival’s Artistic Director, Willie White, will also meet with participants to give a session on internationalising their practice, guidance on festivals to attend and work to see with their travel bursary.

A final informal sharing of the ideas and the mentorship process will happen at a day-long public symposium event in a Dublin city centre location on Friday July 5th 2024.

Who can apply:

We welcome applications from people at any stage of their creative career who have been a lead creative artist (whether as a director, writer or collaborative artist) of at least one full live performance outside of a student context. Applicants should be the lead creative artist of the proposed project. We cannot consider applications from current undergraduate students. We welcome applications from previous mentorship participants.

We want to hear about ideas for performance that are contemporary, formally ambitious, curious, non-traditional, and that articulate a potential to be artistically compelling. The project idea should be in its early stages of development, without an upcoming definite date for production. In our experience, projects that are more advanced in their development have less freedom to benefit from the input and challenges posed by the mentor over the duration of the mentorship.

Artists must be based on the island of Ireland, must be able to attend meetings in Dublin, and must commit to putting dedicated time aside to work on their project during the mentorship programme. If you live outside Dublin, we will try to subsidise your travel costs to Dublin. Collaborative pairs or groups that work together are also welcome to apply, however should the application be successful, the bursary and travel subsidy will be shared between them.
