Land of Plenty

Land of Plenty

Land of Plenty raises questions about social participation by asking them. A series of interviews as an artistic invention that scratch where it hurts.

Since Europe isn’t built on values, but on economic interests, let’s talk money. Europeans are currently experiencing a crisis of imagination. ‘It has become easier to imagine the end of the world than the end of capitalism’– Mark Fisher.

In an attempt to shift perspective, Studio Julian Hetzel invites a group of ‘alternative’ experts to engage in a series of dialogues that open up new pathways to escape the status quo.

The Land of Plenty is a utopia where everyone’s needs are fulfilled. To enter one has to eat through a thick layer of rice pudding. Who’s given a spoon? Where does hope lie when the land of plenty isn’t designed for you to enter?

Over four days of interviews between experts and invited guests, speakers of the forum, audience members and potentially also with you, a choir is being formed. The multitude of voices creates a temporary snapshot of the socio-economic aspects of coexisting in the land of plenty.

Land of Plenty is part of the programme of the Forum on European Culture held at De Balie between 31 May – 4 June 2023. The 4th edition of this Forum focuses on the meaning and future of democracy in Europe. Other artists and speakers include: Tino Sehgal, Arnon Grunberg, Simon Schama and many more.

To watch the interviews, drop by any time, without reservation between:

  • 1 June, 16:00-17:00 and 18:30-20:30
  • 2 June, 16:00-17:00 and 18:30-20:30
  • 3 June, 15:00-17:00 and 18:30-20:30
  • 4 June, 16:00-17:30

Interested in engaging in a conversation with an alternative expert at the Forum on European Culture?

Sign up for a time slot here, and then come to De Balie (Kleine-Gartmanplantsoen 10, Amsterdam) 15 minutes before your interview.
You will be interviewed by one of our local alternative experts, to share your thoughts and vision on topics related to the present and future culture: money, hope, Europe, and art.

Interviews last twenty minutes, and at the end of each day’s interviews, the experts will gather to reflect on the discussions they had that day.

Your conversation will be one-on-one, but it will be public. This means that an audience will be able to see you and you will not be able to see the audience. The discussions will also be audio recorded.

Does this format sound familiar to you?
The artistic intervention, Land of Plenty, is an adaptation of Studio Julian Hetzel’s performance There Will Be Light, which premiered last year.
This is European culture reflecting on European culture.
