Open call: Dramaturgy Intern
STUDIO JULIAN HETZEL IS LOOKING FOR A DRAMATURGY INTERN
(16-24 h/week, 2-3 days a week, based in Belgium)
Studio Julian Hetzel creates undisciplinary art projects that combine contemporary theatre, performance and visual arts. The studio functions as both a creative workshop and a laboratory, where research and experimentation are the core of the artistic process. The studio is structurally supported by Fonds Podiumkunsten and the City of Utrecht.
We are looking for a Dramaturgy Intern for our upcoming creation Ctrl+C, to premiere in May 2027, in co-creation with NTGent. Ctrl+C focuses on the evolving dynamics between Europe and China. As a dramaturgy intern you will be directly involved in the creation process of this new performance, supporting Julian Hetzel, dramaturg Miguel Melgares and the artistic team.
The internship is preferably for a period of 6 months between September—December 2026 and between April—May 2027 in Gent and online, exact amount of hours / week to be agreed upon.
What will you do:
- Research material for the artistic team and prepare for rehearsals
- Supporting the artistic director and the dramaturg in writing scripts and texts
- Thinking along with the artistic team about possible solutions for scenes as well as helping the actors to try things out
- Document and organize discoveries made during the rehearsal process
- Monitor rehearsal schedule and goals
- Attend weekly team and production meetings
- Communicate with other team members (including: costume designer, engineering and production).
When:
Rehearsal blocks at NTGent are planned from 6–15 July 2026, 31 August – 11 September 2026, 07–18 December 2026, 11–13 February 2027 and 1–4 March 2027.
Montage takes place from 12–30 April 2027 and 3–19 May 2027 at NTGent.
The performance will premiere on 20 May at NTGent, and will then tour internationally.
You are:
- Interested in the Studio Julian Hetzel’s work and work method and are eager to engage in (political) debates
- Proactive and with good communication skills
- Flexible and problem-solving
- Fluent in English
- Based in Belgium
- Available during the rehearsal and montage blocks indicated above
- Experience is not necessary. We value especially passion, enthusiasm and talent
What we offer:
- An inspiring learning environment in a small and dedicated team.
- Flexible internship hours and days
- You are directly involved in the making process of an internationally touring production
- Space to bring in your own ideas
- Financial compensation for your internships as indicated in the Dutch CAO Toneel en Dans
Don’t worry if you are based in Belgium but don’t tick every other box—your unique experience may still be a great fit. If you’re excited about this role, we encourage you to apply anyway.
